There are two types of pumps according to operation dynamics: (i)Volumetric or positively displaced pumps, and (ii)fluid-dynamic or kinetic pumps.

Volumetric pumps include reciprocating and rotary pumps. The latter is categorized into single-acting or double-acting reciprocating pumps. These can be either piston or diaphragm pumps. The latter also includes centrifugal and axial pumps.

Volumetric/Positively Displaced Pumps: According to water pump manufacturers, these pumps are used to create thrust and suction of the fluid using volume variation. Firstly, the fluid is sucked into the pump chamber, then it creates a vacuum, and finally, it is expelled from there to enhance the internal pressure.

For a quick example, the human heart is also a volumetric pump. These move constant liquid volume in their operating cycle as the chamber consists of maximum defined constant volume.

One cycle of operation refers to the full 360° rotation of its driveshaft. The volume generated or accumulated inside the pump is dependent upon pump speed and independent of its pressure.This volumetric pump is sub-categorized into rotary and reciprocating pumps. Rotary Pumps: Without the pump part suppliers, these pumps cannot be rotated. It also includes Archimedean screw-gear pumps and other peristaltic pumps.

Reciprocating Pumps: It uses reciprocating linear motion with the help of a plunger to create compression and expansion of the fluid chamber. These can be either single or double-acting reciprocating machines.

In single-acting pumps, there is a cylinder and inside it, a plunger is there to perform its reciprocating motion. The chamber is directly connected to delivery and suction pipes using non-return valves to give the flow of fluid in a particular expected direction. Hence, the complete operation consists of two steps: suction and then delivery thrust. The active phase is the delivery phase in the operating cycle.

In double-acting pumps, the rotary pump Manufacturer needs to design the delivery and suction phase at the same time with the help of two chambers. When it sucks the fluid, it also points to fluid delivery in another chamber. Hence, there are two acting phases in these pumps.

Kinetic Pumps: These are also known as Turbopumps or fluid-dynamics. Here, the kinetic process is involved in the operation of fluids as energy transfer is taken place through the impeller. Hence, the velocity of the fluid or liquid is transformed into pressure energy.

These can be sub-categorized into axial/centrifugal pumps.

Axial Pumps: Here movement is verified by the intubated propeller. It pushes the fluid-like marine propeller and the movement is parallel to the impeller axis. According to the impeller suppliers, it is used in the low-head flow of a fluid.

Centrifugal Pumps: It consists of one static member i.e., the pump body, and one rotary member i.e., impeller. The impeller movement creates a suction vacuum and fluid rises and is delivered quickly.
