Metal forming is a process by which new metal products are formed by forcefully changing the shape of metal workpiece by using metal forming machine. The process of metal forming includes various operations such as metal cutting, metal stamping, metal bending, metal folding, metal fabrication, metal marking, forging etc. To accomplish all these operations efficiently the metal forming industry uses metal forming machines that helps in making things out of metal in a skillful manner. Ductility and malleability are the key characteristics of metals that allows them to get formed into various shapes.
The various types of metal forming machines used in metal forming industry are discussed below:-
Roll Forming Machine:-
The roll forming machine consists of a continuous set of rolls through which long strips of metal are passed to perform continuously incremental operation on the metal strip. The roll forming machine are suitable for continuous bending operations for bulk productions of metal parts.
Metal Cutting Machine: -
Metal cutting machines are used to cut the metal workpiece into parts or to remove material from its surface. The metal cutting machines are provided with cutting tools that are harder than the metal to be cut and can withstand the heat generated from cutting operation.
Metal Stamping Machine:-
The metal stamping machine consists of a pressing tool. This tool strikes on the metal workpiece with high pressure thus stamping the desired design on its surface.
Milling Machine:-
Milling machine is a power driven machine that is used to give new shape to the metal work piece by removing material from its surface. Milling machine is a versatile machine that can perform various complex operations such as making drills, cutting threads, making an internal shape in the workpiece, making stepwise cuts etc.
Metal Sheet Machine:-
Metal sheet machines can perform the operations of stretching, bending, flinging,spinning, etc to shape the thin metal sheets by applying pressure.
Metal Bending Machine:-
The metal bending machine is used for calculated deformation of metal sheet to impart it new shape.
Fabrication Machine:-
Metal fabrication machines are used to construct new machines, constructions and tools from raw metal sheets or bars.
The metal forming machines can be manually operated or CNC(computerized numerical control) operated, in which machine works on the bases of instructions provided by computer.
